A woman armed with a handgun was fatally shot by deputies early Wednesday in Lake Forest after they encountered her while responding to a burglary call, authorities said.
It was around 1 a.m. when deputies were called to the 22000 block of Loumont Drive about a burglary in progress at a home, said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
When they arrived, they came in contacted with the woman, in her late 20s, across the street from the home holding what looked like a gun.
Deputies gave her multiple commands to drop the gun and at some point the shooting occurred, Braun said.
The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A gun was taken from the scene.
As is typical in law-enforcement-involved shootings, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is investigating.
