The new year is just a few days away, and while many are making arrangements to party, some agencies are planning for tipsy party-goers’ safe arrivals home.
Orange County law-enforcement departments will be on high alert as they watch for impaired drivers, too.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 29 people died in crashes in the state during three days last year that included New Year’s Eve and Day, while more than 750 were arrested for driving under the influence.
Even a first misdemeanor DUI conviction can cost the offender $21,000-plus when adding up fines, penalties, legal fees, restitution and increased insurance costs, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Ways to get home if you shouldn’t drive:
The Automobile Club of Southern California is offering its free Tipsy Tow service. It’s available from 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, to 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1. A motorist who has been drinking – or someone calling on his or her behalf – can dial 1-800-400-4AAA and ask for a tow. A service truck will arrive and take the would-be driver – no passengers allowed – and the car home, free for the first seven miles. Non-members can use this service as well.
Orange County Transportation Authority buses will give free rides along its routes between 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, and 2:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1.
For those who aren’t drinking: authorities recommended they download an app, Designated Driver VIP, or DDVIP, which is free on iTunes and Android. It helps sober party-goers find bars that offer free non-alcoholic drinks, food and other incentives for designated drivers. It also has functions to help contact Uber and Lyft.
