A man suspected of firing off gunshots in his Laguna Niguel residence was arrested after a brief standoff with law enforcement on Saturday evening, March 9, authorities said.
Around 9 p.m., authorities were called to the home in the 31000 block of Golden Lantern for a wellness check on the man who was reportedly armed with a rifle, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Gonzalez. The neighborhood was briefly placed on lockdown as the man, alone inside the home, began firing his weapon when deputies arrived.
A few gunshots nearly struck deputies outside the house and a sheriff’s helicopter while officials attempted to negotiate with the man, though it was not clear if the man was intentionally firing at law enforcement, Gonzalez said.
A SWAT team was called to the scene. The man surrendered peacefully after about a half hour and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
No injuries were reported.
