Man dies, woman injured after car shot at in Anaheim

A man died and a woman was injured after a car they were riding in was shot at in Anaheim late Thursday, police said.

Just before 11 p.m., officers discovered the pair at an Arco gas station on Brookhurst Street and Crescent Avenue, said Anaheim police Sgt. Steve Pena.

They found the victim, an approximately 25-year-old man, who had been shot and was in cardiac arrest, Pena said. Officers performed CPR on the man before he was taken to a hospital where he died.

A woman was also at the scene with the man.

Investigators found that before the shooting the pair had been visiting friends in a nearby neighborhood in the 2100 block of Brownwood Avenue, Pena said.

“When they arrived in the neighborhood, their vehicle was shot,” he said.

After the shooting, the victim was still in the driver’s seat and the moving car crashed into a parked truck.

“But (the woman) managed to take control of the vehicle and went to the gas station which is just around the corner,” Pena said.

The woman had head injuries from the crash but was not hit by gunfire. Her injuries did not appear life-threatening. At the scene she was alert and talking to first responders.

Investigators suspect there could be a gang element related to the shooting but did not have a description of a suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 714-765-1900.
