Marine dies in live-fire night training at Camp Pendleton

A Marine at Camp Pendleton’s School of Infantry-West died Thursday night during a live-fire training event, military officials said Friday, Aug. 18.

An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing and the command is cooperating with the effort, said Capt. Josh Pena, a spokesman for the Training and Education Command, which runs the infantry school.

He said the school is providing support to the family and the Marine’s peers. The Marine’s identity will not be released until 24 hours after notification of the family.

The live-fire exercise was part of routine training at the school, which is one of two destinations where new Marines go for additional training after graduating boot camp.
