A Marine assigned to a helicopter training squadron is dead at Camp Pendleton.
A Marine spokesperson with the 3rd Marine Air Wing said the death occurred around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, during “routine military operations.”
The cause is under investigation, and the Marine’s identity will not be released until next-of-kin is notified, the 3rd MAW spokesperson said.
No further details on how the Marine died were provided.
The unit operates at the Camp Pendleton Air Station, but the squadron is part of the 3rd Marine Air Wing located at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
In February, five Marines of the wing’s Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron died after their CH-53E Super Stallion crashed in the mountains in eastern San Diego County during a storm. In June 2022, five Marines in an MV-22 Osprey based at Camp Pendleton were killed when their aircraft went down in a remote sandy training range near Glamis.
