Murder charge filed against 20-year-old accused of killing Santa Ana man

SANTA ANA – A murder charge was filed Tuesday against a 20-year-
old alleged gang member accused of gunning down a Santa Ana man outside an
apartment complex last week.
Felix Martinez Vargas of Santa Ana also faces a sentence-enhancement
allegation of a gang member’s vicarious discharge of a firearm causing great
bodily injury, according to court records.
Alexis Ascencion, 18, of Santa Ana, was also arrested in connection
with the killing of 36-year-old Mariano Labra Ramos of Santa Ana, but so far
has not been charged. He was due in court Wednesday for a hearing alleging a
probation violation.
Ascencion pleaded guilty Sept. 11 to a misdemeanor contempt of court
count for violating gang injunctions and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and
placed on three years of formal probation.
Ramos, who had no gang ties, was standing in front of an apartment
complex in the 1900 block of West Myrtle St. when he was shot about 1:30 p.m.
Friday, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
Police also arrested two underage boys, one 15 and the other 16, in
connection with the shooting, Bertagna said.
