Newport Beach and Costa Mesa police were investigating after an online threat aimed at some Newport-Mesa Unified School District high schools surfaced sometime Friday, authorities said.
Officials have not made public any details about the threat, but a district statement on Saturday said extra police would be patrolling around the high schools over the weekend and on Monday.
Michelle Barto, a member of the district’s Board of Trustees, posted on Instagram that many parents had reached out regarding the post and that police were working with the district.
Officials with the district and both police departments declined to say where the threat was posted, or what specifics, if any, regarding date, time, location and manner were included.
“Out of an abundance of caution we have asked for, and will receive, additional police presence at tonight’s Winter Formal dance,” Estancia High School administrators said in an email to parents, which was screenshot and posted on the Facebook group Costa Mesa Buzz.
NMUSD has six high schools: Estancia, Newport Harbor, Costa Mesa, Corona del Mar, Back Bay/Monte Vista and Early College, according to the district’s website.
