An SUV slammed into a police cruiser after running a red light in Fountain Valley early Sunday, sending the driver and a police officer to the hospital, authorities said.
The Fountain Valley officer escaped the crash with minor injuries, police said in a statement. The SUV driver was not injured.
The crash occurred at Slater Avenue and Magnolia street at around 3:02 a.m. Police said preliminary information on the crash showed a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling westbound on Slater when it ran a red light at the intersection.
The Fountain Valley cruiser was travelling northbound on Magnolia when the Pathfinder broadsided it.
Police identified the driver of the Nissan as a 37-year-old man from Buena Park. The officer has not been identified.
“The officer and the driver were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment and were later released,” police said.
Police have not said whether they suspect the Nissan driver of a crime. A Fountain Valley police spokesman did not return a request for comment.
