A 20-year-old Santa Ana man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a shooting in which a 3-year-old girl was struck by gunfire while sitting in the backseat of a car, police said Monday.
The shooting occurred on the evening of Feb. 25 in the area of 15th Street and Spurgeon Street, where a 3-year-old girl was hospitalized after a bullet struck her in the back. The boyfriend of the child’s mother, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was believed to be the intended target, police said.
On Friday, Feb. 29, police located Angel Castillo in Santa Fe Springs and arrested him. Castillo, described as a documented gang member, is being charged by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office with two counts of attempted murder, one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and one count of committing a crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang, authorities said in a statement.
Details on the current condition of the child or the motive behind the shooting were not immediately available.
